The RAMTRANS 2024 conference took place from May 15-17, 2024, at the Pullman Hotel in London. This triannual’s international event brought together experts in the transport, storage, and disposal of radioactive materials and nuclear materials.

Various experts presented on the latest developments, research, and case studies in these areas, sharing best practices and innovative solutions for the safe transport and storage of radioactive and nuclear materials and the conference also included a trade exhibition for suppliers of relevant products and services and provided over 40 presentations and poster sessions.

WNTI were Gold Sponsors of RAMTrans 2024

At the RAMTrans conference, the World Nuclear Transport Institute had a strong presence, showcasing their expertise and commitment to the industry. Amy Northage and Emily Midgley managed the exhibition stand, engaging with attendees and providing valuable insights into WNTI’s initiatives. Elisa Penda made significant contributions by Co-Chairing Session 7, which focused on Regulation and Institutional issues. Additionally, Peter Buchan, a WNTI Board Member, delivered the Key Note Speech, titled “Keeping Nuclear Moving”, he highlighted the crucial role of transportation in supply chain and elaborated on WNTI’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of safety and security in global nuclear transport.

Keynote Speakers:

  • Seth KYBIRD (CEO of Nuclear Transport Solutions) emphasized the critical role of transportation in the nuclear sector, the topic addressed “Without Transport, there is no Nuclear”
  • Professor Tim TINSLEY (National Nuclear Laboratory) presented on the future potential of nuclear technologies in space and health, the topic addressed “The Impact of Radioisotopes in Space Exploration”.
  • Pete BUCHAN Board of Director of World Nuclear Transport Institute the topic addressed “Keeping Nuclear Moving”, he highlighted the crucial role of transportation in supply chain and elaborated on WNTI’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of safety and security in global nuclear transport
  • Chris JONES (Office for Nuclear Regulation) discussed “it‘s good to talk: communication and cooperation within the transport chain”

Highlights:

  • Enhanced safety and security measures in the transport of radioactive materials: IAEA’s Integrated Approach to Training, Compliance, and Transport Facilitation
  • Rising to the challenges of denials and delays shipments
  •  Key insights were shared on improving regulatory practices to facilitate smoother operations across different country for mitigating risks during transit
  • Presentations covered autonomous transport systems, digital twins, advanced packaging solutions, and other technological innovations that enhance operational capabilities and safety standards in the nuclear transport industry
  • Researchers presented new materials and designs for nuclear transport packaging, emphasizing improvements in durability, security, and compliance with international regulations. These innovations aim to address the challenges posed by transporting new types of radioactive waste and materials associated with emerging nuclear technologies.
  • ONR spoke about the common non-compliances revealed during dutyholder transport inspections and how putting in place robust arrangements from the outset reduces the potential for future enforcement action and regularly seen concerns not understanding UK specific regulations as, Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 consent.
