IAEA 48th Transport Safety Standards Committee (TRANSSC 48)

WNTI Meeting Report

The 48th Transport Safety Standards Committee (TRANSSC 48) convened at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) headquarters in Vienna from the 10 -14 June 2024. TRANSSC comprises 71 Member States and is observed by 11 entities from Inter-Governmental Organisations (such as the IMO and ISO) and Non-Governmental Organisations, including WNTI.

The TRANSSC 48 meeting saw the registration of 82 participants, representing 34 Member States and 6 Observers. Delegates from Member States included permanent representatives from competent authorities and, frequently, their appointed technical experts. The plenary session was presided over by David Pstrak (USA/NRC), the Chair of TRANSSC, with Shazia Fayyaz, head of the IAEA Transport Safety Unit, serving as the Technical Secretary.

The TRANSSC Technical Expert Groups (TTEGs) are tasked with scrutinising regulatory issues in finer detail than the main committee and making recommendations for the committee’s consideration. During TRANSSC 48, TTEG Breakout Sessions were held.

WNTI was represented in the TRANSSC plenary sessions by Elisa Penda, Daiichiro Ito, Steven Crane, Thierry Miquel, Franz Kattner, and Pierre Malesys. For the TTEG-Criticality meeting, Pierre Malesys and Daiichiro Ito participated. The TTEG-PPA saw the involvement of Franz P. Kattner, while Elisa Penda, Steven Crane, and Thierry Miquel attended the TTEG-Operational Matters (OM) session.

Florian Darras participated in the TRANSSC plenary sessions on behalf of the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) and also represented WNTI activities during the TTEG-RP meeting. Additionally, Marc-Andre Charette and Peter Suter attended the meetings as part of the delegations from Canada and Switzerland, respectively.
