U.S. NRC Approves NAC International’s OPTIMUS-L Package for Transport of HALEU TRISO

In December, NAC International, Inc. (NAC) received approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for its OPTIMUS®-L packaging to transport high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) TRI-structural ISOtropic (TRISO) particle fuel for advanced reactors.

The NRC issued Certificate of Compliance (CoC) No. 9390, Revision 2, which allows the OPTIMUS-L system to transport HALEU TRISO fuel compacts to support an advanced reactor project for a customer. This is the first high-capacity packaging systems to be approved by NRC for transport of HALEU TRISO fuel, which will reduce packaging and transport of HALEU fuel. The OPTIMUS-L packaging system can be optimized for transport of other HALEU forms and design configurations.
